Could the advancement of self-regulating artificial intelligence lead to the extinction of humans?
Have you ever watched Terminator, Blade Runner, I Robots, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and other fictional films that tell the story of the extinction of humans because they are controlled by robots who want to rule the world? Could it happen in real life? In today’s era, this may happen along with the development of technology and the discovery of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Reporting to Stanford Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that allows computer systems, software, programs, and robots to "think" intelligently like humans. The artificial intelligence (AI) of a machine is created by humans through complex programming algorithms. Every year, scientists demonstrate many new capacities of artificial intelligence that can perform functions that are impossible for humans to perform. However, many fear that AI could reach a high point in its development and lead to human extinction. Scientists Russell, Dewey, and Tegmark claim in their research that when people lose control of AI, it becomes "more dangerous than nuclear weapons" (page 107). Even Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple) are also worried about this. AI can indeed cause human extinction but if you think of extinction as in fiction films, then that is a mistake. AI can cause human extinction with two logical possibilities, namely when AI experiences errors in carrying out human instructions, and if it is used in a negative direction.
Errors in carrying out human instructions are common in Artificial intelligence (AI). The way AI works is to find the fastest shortcuts/alternative to carry out human orders. This has proven to be very helpful for humans at work. However, the drawback is that AI is not good at distinguishing between good and bad shortcuts/alternatives to do and not to do. For example on Google maps, even though AI guides you to the right destination, you may be missed on difficult roads such as steep canyons, and cliffs that can cause you harm. This AI weakness can also have the potential for more extreme things and even human destruction on a large scale such as the use of AI in weapons, and nuclear, AI can mismanage human instructions and take alternatives that cause mass warfare, and chaos. AI will do that alternative even if it harms humans because AI cannot distinguish whether alternatives are good or bad for humans.
The second possibility is when Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in a negative direction. The advantage of artificial intelligence is that it can do things that humans cannot do, such as calculating and analyzing data that is so complex that it cannot be done by humans. This advantage of AI is like a double-edged sword, if AI is used positively it will be very helpful, but if used negatively it will cause great destruction. When AI is used by terrorists, they can steal data, tap people's devices, rob, spread hoax news, propaganda that triggers wars between countries, and many other crimes that can cause great chaos. What's even more terrifying is that if terrorists create weapons of mass murder with AI. The artificial intelligence robots with bad intentions, then it will cause nightmares.
Apart from the two possibilities above, we know that artificial intelligence (AI) has limitations. AI is a human creation. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a masterpiece of scientists so in creating it, many things have been carefully thought out and considered critically. No matter how sophisticated AI is, it still has limitations. Indeed AI can learn and work independently but AI cannot think or create something new outside of its field. AI also cannot think creatively, abstractly, and complexly like humans. Humans control it so that AI cannot do anything that is dangerous or has the potential to lead to human extinction.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that might lead to human extinction in two possible scenarios. First, errors in carrying out human instructions and creating chaos because the shortcuts/alternatives carried out by Artificial intelligence (AI) are not appropriate and endanger humans. Second, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used for negative things and causes chaos, crises, wars, and various other things that occur in the long term and have the potential to destroy humans. Indeed Artificial Intelligence (AI) is only a human creation that has limitations. While it is possible to think freely, AI cannot do anything new based on its own ideas. AI was created with a specific purpose and will perform tasks according to the purpose for which it was created. However, that is an assessment based on current developments. The development of technology will continue to grow and will never stop. Technology itself has its good and bad sides. So it is possible for the two scenarios of human extinction above to occur in the future when the development of artificial intelligence is very sophisticated.
